- He was a right-handed batsman and a wicket-keeper who played in one first-class cricket match for Kent County Cricket Club.
- Layman was born in Norwood in Surrey in 1858.
- His only first-class appearance came in 1893 against Lancashire.
- Ten years later, Layman appeared in a single-innings match for Granville against London County, taking one stumping.He died in November 1940 at Beckenham in Kent aged 82.
