Hoveyda is professor of chemistry at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA, and holds the position of department chair.
He currently works as a researcher at the Institute of Science and Supramolecular Engineering in the University of Strasbourg.
He studies asymmetric catalysis, and is particularly noted for his work on developing catalysts for asymmetric olefin metathesis, such as the Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst.
In recent years he has worked extensively with N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands.
His research also focuses on copper-catalyzed allylic alkylations and conjugate additions using these ligands. Hoveyda received his Ph.D.
from Yale University in 1986, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University.
He received the Cope Scholar award from the American Chemical Society in 1998.
