- He was a first-round draft choice, 30th overall, in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox.
- Kelly was the top minor league prospect in the Red Sox organization when he was acquired by the San Diego Padres after the 2010 season, along with three other prospects, in exchange for All-Star player Adrián González.
