About Charles Hahn

  • Charles Theophilus Hahn (also surnamed Headley; 1 March 1870 – 16 September 1930 Holborn, London), was an Anglican missionary priest, botanical illustrator and artist.Born in Wandsworth, he was the only son of Theophilus Sigmund Hahn and Helen Marfield Hahn (née Walters), and grew up in the village of Headley in Hampshire.
  • He was educated at Charterhouse and at Pembroke College, Oxford, acquiring a B.A.

  • Soon after being awarded the B,A, he embarked on a career in the ministry and registered at the Leeds Clergy School, being ordained a deacon in 1893 and a priest in 1894.
  • He served curacies in Sydenham, Bradford, Almondbury and Barnsley before becoming Vicar of Dewsbury Moor, before leaving for South Africa as a missionary — to the Diocese of Zululand in 1908, rising in time to become its archdeacon.In South Africa he was appointed curate of Etalaneni in 1908.
  • The following year he became priest-in-charge of Empangeni and Inhlwati (’Nhlwati) in the Diocese of Zululand remaining there until 1913 when he became archdeacon of Eshowe and canon of St Peter's in Vryheid.
  • He was Sub-dean of St.
  • George's Cathedral, Cape Town, from 1919 to 1922; Priest in charge at Keetmanshoop, Namibia, from 1922 to 1924; and archdeacon of Damaraland from 1924 to 1927.
  • Upon his return to England he settled in Chelmsford.
