About Frank Judd Baron Judd

  • Frank Ashcroft Judd, Baron Judd (born 28 March 1935) is a British Labour Party politician. Judd was educated at the City of London School and the London School of Economics.
  • He became Secretary-General of the International Voluntary Service, a member of the executive committee of the National Peace Council and chairman of the UK National Youth Committee of Freedom from Hunger. Judd became General Secretary of the International Voluntary Service in 1960 and is credited for overseeing a significant period of expansion for the organisation.
  • In 1966, Judd left his position at IVS to begin his career in politics. Judd contested Sutton and Cheam in 1959 (where his mother Helen had been the Labour candidate in 1945) and Portsmouth West in 1964.
  • He was Member of Parliament for Portsmouth West from 1966 to 1974, and after boundary changes, for Portsmouth North from 1974 to 1979, when he lost his seat to the Conservative Peter Griffiths. Judd was a junior minister for the Royal Navy (1974–1976), Minister for Overseas Development (1976–1977), and Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1977 to 1979.
  • Director of Oxfam (1985–91), Judd was made a life peer on 10 June 1991 with the title Baron Judd, of Portsea in the County of Hampshire.
  • In the Lords he is a member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights. Lord Judd was member of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly from 1970 to 1973 and again from 1997 to 2005, where he became rapporteur on Chechnya and visited Grozny several times. Judd was interviewed in 2012 as part of The History of Parliament's oral history project.
