About Frederick Fane

  • Frederick Luther Fane, (27 April 1875 – 27 November 1960) played cricket for the England cricket team in 14 Test matches.
  • He also played for Essex, Oxford University and London County. Fane was born at Curragh Camp in County Kildare, Ireland, where his father Frederick John Fane, an officer in the British Army, was stationed with the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot.
  • He was a great-grandson of John Fane, a politician, of the family of the Earls of Westmorland.
  • He was educated at Charterhouse School and Magdalen College, Oxford.Fane captained the England cricket team on five occasions: three times when he took over from the injured Arthur Jones, and twice when he took over from H.
