  • For five years,m following the graduation, he worked as an actor at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden and appeared in such plays as The Lady from the Sea and John Gabriel Borkman.
  • When he became director in 1976, his first role was to assist Ingmar Bergman to direct The Dance of Death (based on a play by August Strindberg).
  • Prior to his assistant directorial debut with Bergman, Järvefelt was an opera director at Vadstena Academy, with his first opera there being Alessandro Stradella's San Giovanni Battista. His professional debut was in 1976 with Verdi's Falstaff at the Hagen Opera in Germany which was later followed by The Barber of Seville at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1977.
  • That year Järvefelt began a three-year engagement as chief opera director at Gelsenkirchen, directing several Verdi productions such as Don Carlos, Il trovatore and La forza del destino.
  • Besides directing Verdi's plays, Järvefelt had also directed Ariadne auf Naxos, Hansel and Gretel, The Magic Flute, and Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria.
  • Not long after, he directed L'incoronazione di Poppea with Komische Oper Berlin and another Ariadne in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1979, Järvefelt worked with Welsh National Opera on The Magic Flute, and in 1982 did Un ballo in maschera.
  • This was followed by a string of operas such as Der Ring des Nibelungen from 1983 to 1985, La bohème in 1984, La traviata in 1988, and prior to his death, Der Rosenkavalier.
  • He also directed some rare Richard Strauss's plays in Santa Fe Opera, including Die ägyptische Helena, Feuersnot, and Friedenstag.
  • His last performance was with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, showing such plays as Erwartung and Bluebeard's Castle simultaneously.Although he never worked in Scotland, The Magic Flute was the only example of his performance to have been seen there.
  • Scottish Opera had borrowed his staging of Don Giovanni in Oslo, but due to poor health at the time, Järvefelt was unable to direct, and due to it, whatever came of the Scottish production, doesn't reflect the creator's ideas.Järvefelt died of cancer at the age of 42.
