About Gordon Sigurjonson

  • Guðmundur "Gordon" Sigurjonson (April 15, 1883 in Norður-Þingeyjarsýsla, Iceland – 1967 Reykjavík) was an Icelandic-Canadian professional ice hockey coach.
  • He coached the Winnipeg Falcons to the gold medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics.
  • He showcased Glíma, an Icelandic martial arts, at the 1908 Summer Olympics.He served in the Canadian military from 1916 to 1919, becoming a Sergeant in the 27th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.
  • Prior to that was the trainer of the Falcons.
  • After the 1920 Olympics, he moved home to Iceland where he worked within sports.In 1924, Guðmundur was sentenced to eight months in prison for having sexual relations with another man.
  • He served three months of the sentence.
  • He is the only person to have served a prison sentence for violating the Icelandic sodomy law.
