About Jawhar Sircar

  • Jawhar Sircar (born March 22, 1952) is a public intellectual based out of Kolkata who is known for his writings and public talks at eminent institutions of national and international repute.
  • He is currently Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, which is the premier Social Science research institution.
  • He is also on the Governing bodies of Universities and Educational institutes. The Asiatic Society, established in 1784 in Kolkata as the Royal Asiatic Society, awarded him the Dr Biman Behari Memorial Lectureship in 2017 “for his outstanding contribution the history and political thought”.
  • He was also selected for the Nihar Ranjan Smarak Samman by the Sanskriti Sansad of Kolkata. Earlier, in 2006, eminent historian, late Tapan Raichaudhuri of Oxford university dedicated a whole article in Bengal's journal of intellect and culture, Desh, where he discussed his first research work The Construction of the Hindu Identity in Medieval Western Bengal: The Role of Popular Cults (2005) and commended him "for his exceptional analytical power and depth of knowledge in diverse fields” As a civil servant, he had the unique honour of being commended in public by the prime minister of India as "a most distinguished and knowledgeable civil servant", which is on record.
  • In 2011, the British Museum conveyed its “esteem and gratitude” to Jawhar Sircar “for his outstanding contribution to cultural cooperation between the Republic of India and the United Kingdom” and conferred a medal on him.
