About Mads Stage

  • Mads Stage (6 July 1922 – 28 May 2004), born in Copenhagen, was a Danish artist. Stage was a respected and beloved artist in large parts of the world.
  • His enormous production includes design and decoration of everything from postcards, posters, calendars, stamps and books to porcelain, textiles and much more. Stage has, among others, illustrated Henry David Thoreau's Walden, or Life in the Woods, Ivan Turgenev's The Hunter's Sketches, fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen and children's books by Danish author Jens Fink-Jensen. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
  • His favorite scenes were animals and birds, of which he was a great connoisseur, but as a versatile artist, he designed artistic textiles, fine articles for everyday use, decoration of china and textile printing. For many years, Mads worked for the Danish medical industry and made a large number of scientific drawings.
  • Further, he was a master of city scenes and landscapes and he produced splendid series of watercolors from Copenhagen, Stockholm, London, Scotland, Holland, Paris, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, and the USA.
