About Mamert Stankiewicz

  • Mamert Stankiewicz (January 22, 1889 – November 26, 1939) was a Polish naval officer of the merchant marine, the commander of Lwów, SS Polonia and finally the captain of the Polish ocean liner MS Pilsudski.
  • On November 26, 1939 during World War II, while the captain of "Pilsudski" incorporated into the British Navy and converted into the ship transporting British and Polish soldiers was torpedoed by German U-boat, he, after inspecting the entire sinking ship that there were no sailors and soldiers left behind, and after rescuing sailors and soldiers from the ice-cold Northern Atlantic, he died of exhaustion.
