About Paul Carafotes

  • Paul Carafotes (born March 23, 1959 in Medford, Massachusetts.
  • He is an American actor, possibly best known for playing Harold Dyer in the prime time television drama Knots Landing.
  • He appeared in 50 episodes from 1988 to 1991.
  • In 2006 Carafotes wrote, directed and produced the award winning short film, Club Soda, edited into Stories USA.
  • He has starred in films, television, commercials, and on stage. Carafotes was born into an American Greek family and raised in Somerville, Massachusetts.
  • He graduated from Somerville High School.
  • The Beatles played one of the biggest catalyst in his life from the moment he watched them on the Ed Sullivan show at 4 years old.
  • He began performing as a Beatle in his parents garage, lip-syncing to those fantastic records.
  • The neighborhood girls would pay 5 cents entrance fee and scream their heads off, chase the little Beatle band though the neighborhood.
  • Paul got the acting bug when a friend was trying out for the Christmas show in Junior High school.
  • He decided to sneak into the theater, hide out in the back of the auditorium and generally became a distraction by teasing the students that were auditioning.
  • The drama teacher had enough of his clowning around demanded he get up on stage and audition.
  • He ended up with one of the starring roles in the production of "Babe's in Toy Land".
  • He walked out on stage for the first time enthusiastically, gripped by fear to a full house, five hundred of his fellow students.
  • His first line uttered produced laughter intoxicating Paul.
  • His love for the movies came from his dad and together they would watch all the old 1930s and 1940s movies repeatedly.
  • James Cagney was Paul's favorite.
  • He tried over an over to emulate him and later in his film debut he would pay tribute to Cagney.
  • The summers would begin with his older sister Sophia prodding him to tryout for a theater company called Project Star, which incorporated all facets of theater production.
  • Everyone cast had to build sets, paint them, learn to apply make-up, take singing lessons, dancing, fencing, improve classes culminating in several musical productions.
  • Paul would get the lead in his second summer playing Tony Kirby in "You Can't Take It with You".
  • Yet, he still didn't exactly know what he would do once out of high school.
  • Then Robert De Niro's Johnny boy performance in "Mean Streets" followed by Jack Nicholson's iconic performances in "Chinatown" and "One Flew over the Cuokoo's Nest", blew him away, the seed that had been planted beginning with the Beatles had germinated in to a plan, acting may be a possibility.
  • After starring in his senior year production of "Some Like it Hot" the musical (Sugar) winning the Tony Curtis role a student from MIT was in the audience and approached Paul after a performance and asked him to star in his college thesis, Paul agreed.
  • At the same time a friend ask him if he wanted to take a trip to New York City over the weekend.
  • He quickly accepted.
  • Without informing his parents he left for New York.
  • He knew his parents would require, a place to stay, education and a job if he were to pursue his acting dream.
  • On this whirlwind trip the dye was cast and all three were accomplished.
  • In September 1977, Paul was off to New York City.
  • Studying at HB Studios and then with Joanna Merlin at the 78 St.
  • Playhouse.
  • Providence would soon move again, as Joanna would be responsible for his first leading role in a feature film, all this in under two years since arriving in New York City. Carafotes began his professional career with a performance at the age of 20 that Variety, the famed industry publication, called "amazing" for his portrayal of Ralph Morrelli as the talented and soulfull street kid from Philly, in the 20th Century Fox film Headin' for Broadway.

  • This was to be Demi Moore screen debut as Carafotes' girlfriend.
  • He then gave a gritty performance as the working class, Vinnie Salvucci co-starring alongside Tom Cruise in All the Right Moves, and delivered a memorable performance in the industry short film Scriptfellas.
  • Carafotes won an L.A.
  • Drama Critics Award for writing "Beyond the Ring", for which he was also nominated for best actor.
  • He also won multiple awards including the audience award at the Beverly Hills Film Festival for writing, producing and directing the super natural, fantasy short film, "Club Soda", which starred James Gandolfini, Louis Gossett, Jr., Joe Mantegna and Michael Rispoli.
  • In 2010, Carafotes returned to acting in the Emmy award-winning series Damages, where he appeared in season 3 for 6 episodes as the "Man In Overcoat" aka Ben De Falco.
  • Paul has appeared in over 100 hours of prime time television shows.
  • Carafotes has many talents: writing screen plays, stage plays and composing music thus he began writing a series of children's books inspired after the birth of his son Charlie, called, "The Adventures of Charlie Bubbles!" James Gandolfini describe the books as "soon to be classics because I found myself reading them over and over again and again".
  • There are three books in the series including a coloring book and cd/album of songs that complement the storybooks entitled, "Sing with Charlie Bubbles".
  • Four of the six songs are written and performed by Paul.
  • The picture books and pop tunes have a very positive and uplifting feeling for the whole family.
