He is a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He was elected as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2016, when Sarbananda Sonowal became Chief Minister.He became a member of the BJP in 1992 and was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from Sorbhog in Barpeta district in 2011.
