Wilfred Patrick Dolan Ryan (March 15, 1898 in Worcester, Massachusetts – December 10, 1980 in Scottsdale, Arizona) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball.
Ryan attended College of the Holy Cross.
He pitched in the major leagues from 1919 to 1933, appearing in three consecutive World Series for the New York Giants from 1922 to 1924.
Ryan was the winning pitcher for the eventual world champion Giants in their 3-2 Game 1 victory over the New York Yankees in the 1922 World Series.
Ryan repeated the feat for the Giants the following season, winning Game 1 of the 1923 World Series over the Yankees, 5-4.
In Game 6 of the 1923 series, with the Giants facing elimination down three games to two, Ryan entered the game in the eighth inning with a 4-2 lead and the bases loaded.
He walked the first batter to narrow the margin to 4-3, then struck out the mighty Babe Ruth, but gave up a three-run single to Bob Meusel that clinched the game and the series for the Yankees.
In Game 3 of the 1924 World Series, Ryan became the first relief pitcher to ever hit a home run in the postseason. In 1937 and 1938, Ryan pitched for Falmouth in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
He appeared in only one game in 1937, but in 1938 was a regular contributor, leading the team to the league title.Ryan managed in the minor leagues from 1941 to 1942 and 1944 to 1945 and was later a minor league general manager.
In 1961 he was presented with the King of Baseball award given by Minor League Baseball.
