- She was born in Palo Alto, California, and studied piano and composition at Pomona College with Karl Kohn, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975.
- She continued her studies in composition at the Liege Conservatory in Belgium with Henri Pousseur and at Yale with Jacob Druckman and Betsy Jolas.
- After completing her education, she took a position as assistant professor at Columbia University.
- She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987.
