About Wolf Mittler

  • Wolf Mittler (1 January 1918 – 11 November 2002) was a German radio host and journalist, known as one of the persons associated with the nickname Lord Haw-Haw. He became internationally known as Lord Haw-Haw on the English language propaganda radio programme Germany Calling, broadcast by Nazi German radio to audiences in Great Britain and the United States, during World War II.
  • Mittler spoke nearly flawless English, as he had learnt it from his mother (who was born in Ireland to German parents) in childhood.During his career broadcasting for Germany Calling, Mittler was reported to find political matters distasteful, and was eventually replaced by Norman Baillie-Stewart (a former British spy for Nazi Germany).
  • In 1943, Mittler fell under suspicion and fled to Italy, where he was captured by the Gestapo, but managed to escape to Switzerland.After the end of World War II and his subsequent return to Germany, he became a radio host for Bavarian Radio.
  • There he became best known for his simultaneous translation of Kennedy's speech addressing the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, and the first manned moonlanding live in 1969, among others. Later in his career he spoke the traffic information for German radio Bayern 3.
