About Bernard Connolly New Jersey
- Bernard Connolly (December 1804 – June 9, 1880) was an American newspaperman, politician and writer based in Freehold, New Jersey. As a boy in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Bernard Connolly learned the printing business at the Westmoreland Republican, becoming proficient in both newspaper and book printing. At 21, he moved to Princeton, New Jersey, where he entered into a partnership in a printing house already in business there.
- While living in Princeton he married Hannah Ann Downie. In 1834 he moved to Freehold, where he founded a weekly newspaper, the Monmouth Democrat, with an editorial policy supporting Jacksonian democracy.
- This quickly became the most successful newspaper circulating in Monmouth County at the time.
- Connolly was proprietor of the Democrat until January 1854, when he sold the business.
